For the lastest updates on Signal, check out our Dev Blog

Signal is my thesis project at Parsons The New School for Design during my Masters in Fine Arts in Design and Technology. Signal is a two-dimensional non-combat adventure game that focuses on the importance of communication. Staged in space, you play as an astronaut armed only with the ability to send out a radio signal. This signal will give the player the ability to navigate, manipulate, and interact with the environment in meaningful ways. As the player moves through levels, they must use their signaling ability to save other lost space travelers and solve puzzles in the hopes rectifying past wrongs and finding their way back home.

A fun little project where I worked with interaction artist Haeyoung Kim, noise artist Bryant Davis, and animator Luis Domingo to hack a Super Mario Bros. rom to make our own take on this legendary game. What came out was Nippon Ninja Bros., a game where you run through the level dodging kunais and shurikens. I contributed programming and art assets. We even got to write the game onto an original NES cartridge, so now you can play Nippon Ninja Bros. on the NES. Awesome!

During the first quarter of 2011, I joined Muse Games and helped with CreaVures during the last month of development. Muse is a great community of techies, artists, developers, and game lovers who really made me feel at home. I helped oversee a lot of the QA work during the final rush to get CreaVures out the door and helped with playtesting and giving feedback on game design and playability. I also helped to set up missions for the The Nest, an online social experience that takes place in the CreaVures universe. Check out Muse Games and the awesome work they do [HERE].

The Activate! project is an initiative to teach children game design and green practices. The project is a collaboration between technology company AMD and multimedia lab PETLab of New York City. The website, targeted towards young adults ages 11-14, contains tutorials for making games in Game Maker. Participants can create their own games and share them with the rest of the Activate! community. Using Game Maker, Activate! presents a structured curriculum for teaching children game design essentials and the benefits of going green. Through gameplay, students can take charge in cleaning up the environment.

I’m Dreaming? is a digital dynamic narrative system (Flash and Flixel) that enables and promotes players to explore their current surroundings while performing various tasks in a modern office building and in a fantastical castle. I’m Dreaming? was a collaboraive work between myself and fellow MFA candidate Eric Chung. Eric did the game design and I did the art. The project was inspired by its creators own experiences in the corporate world and the dreams that they had while photocopying documents, fetching coffee, and twiddling their thumbs.

Fall asleep or try to stay awake, players will discover the truth and reasoning behind our intentions to dream and how those dreams are heavily influenced by norms and stereotypes in society by exploring the dynamic system. This game was submitted to the 2010 Indiecade competition.

Mark of the Deity is an ongoing personal project. This project is my first serious attempt at a long game design project. I wanted to create something as a homage to a lot of RPG’s and gaming experiences I had when younger. Through MOTD, I want to give online players a full gaming experience of engaging gameplay and narrative. The game is made in Actionscript 3. The project is a currently on hold.

During the Spring of 2010 Parson’s Design and Technology director Anezka Sebek was kind enough to let me host a 4 hour workshop on making games in AS3. This 4 hour workshop was an initiative to help bridge the programming gap between the analog only Game Design 1 and the programming intensive Game Design 2 classes being offered at The New School. I took a group of students through an introduction to programming in the Flex IDE and then proceeded to walk everyone through making a simple brick breaker clone.

Collector Protector is a simple shmup(shoot-em-up) with a different goal than most shmups. While most shump games are about staying alive and beating wave after wave of enemies, Collector Protector takes a look at the idea of sacrifice. Unlike most traditional shmups, the hero’s ship can’t be destroyed. The goal of the game is to do everything in your power to protect the Medic ship for 60 seconds. The power ups only affect the ship. How does a player play a shump when you’re death is inconsequential?

Collector Protector was first playtested by a group of charter school students ages 13-17 at the Parson’s Playtech event. The testers enjoyed the game and some helpful feedback.

Dance Invaders is a collabortive project done with designer Young Eun Min and chiptunes artist Haeyoung Kim. Haeyoung wanted to prototype a wearable a device she could use while fist pumping at her chiptune shows. Forged in Arduino, Dance Invader uses an accelerometer connected to a wristband to read movements. A set of 8 animations can be perform based on the wearers movements. I worked as the programmer on this project.

Years ago I did a thrice weekly comic in undergrad titled ‘Tomcats on Mars’ that was published in the Pitt News. I met some incredible people doing TCOM like comics cohorts like Eric Poole and Dan Wyke. We really tore it up and set the bar for well drawn comics at the University of Pittsburgh. Some of these are a bit sophomoric in humor but making TCOM was a great experience. This was the first time I gave my creativity a public voice. Enjoy.
